Stage One: The Story Often Comes Before the Script

Which story is worth the bet has already been settled by somebody before anyone shouts “action” on a short drama set. Tracing a few hits backward often uncovers a book at the start of the chain. ReelShort’s Breaking the Ice, a 2024 hockey romance revolving around a secret child, is adapted from the novel Shutout by Jami Davenport. On November 1, 2025, ReelShort released Bound by Honor, Spark Me Tenderly free a mafia arranged-marriage series based on a novel by Cora Reilly. Korea’s 2026 office romance Quiet in the Office!, carrying a 19+ age rating, is based on a web novel and webtoon. With a number of app owners also operating reading businesses, source material sits close at hand: Crazy Maple Studio produces the interactive-story app Chapters, Holywater operates the books app My Passion, and GoodShort’s Google Play developer name is GoodNovel. Without a book, writers fall back on proven tropes such as billionaire romance, revenge, identity reveals and family drama. Every scene has to serve up a reveal, a reversal or a threat within seconds, so the script’s job is to condense a long drama story into scenes like that.

Stage Two: Casting Familiar Faces

The format’s economics surface on screen at the casting stage. Scanning the cast lists for short series on IMDb, you see the same names popping up again and again. ReelShort’s werewolf romance Fated to the Alpha was led by Noah Fearnley in 2024 and he came back in 2025 for Love on the Sidelines, a second-chance story about a former football star. In 2025, Rosa Singerman headlined two GoodShort titles, Blood and Bones of the Disowned Daughter and Kidnapped by the Mafia, the second opposite Franky Cammarata. Leads with a following on one app come to the next title with a head start, and that counts for a lot when a series has only a handful of free episodes to win you over. Over in Los Angeles, DramaBox runs a production team. Producers are also casting with a particular viewer in mind, since TheWrap reported in October 2024 that about 75 percent of ReelShort’s users were women.

Stage Three: Seventy Episodes in About Eight Days

According to TheWrap, a Western short drama typically costs $150,000 to $300,000 per series and is filmed in eight to ten days. Wikipedia’s overview of the format is broadly in line: it places a seven- to ten-day shoot at $150,000 to $250,000 for 50 to 70 or more episodes. Do the arithmetic and a 70-episode series shot in eight days means close to nine episodes’ worth of material every working day. Chinese producers selling abroad report leaner numbers still: Jiuzhou Culture placed a 70-episode series at $100,000 to $150,000 in China Daily reporting from January 2024. Per finished episode, that equals roughly $1,400 to $2,100. Dubbed Chinese adaptations made up about 80 percent of the more than 600 titles Jiuzhou reported it had produced for overseas markets, and original overseas productions made up 20 percent. Dubbing lets a studio reuse a finished domestic series, so the expensive shoot happens only once.

Stage Four: Trimming to 60–100 Seconds

In the edit suite, episodes of 60 to 100 seconds are carved from the footage and framed vertically at 9:16 for a phone. Each episode is designed around a question the next one promises to answer, because at that length an episode has room for a turn or two of plot. The house style is the cliffhanger: the mechanism that carries you from one installment to the next. Put together, those slivers give a 70-episode series roughly 70 to 117 minutes of screen time. Episode counts vary widely by title; GoodShort’s official pages, for example, list 30 episodes for My Stolen Crown: I Am the Dragon Queen and 100 for The Dragon King’s Return. ReelShort also maintains official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion, letting the same footage reach viewers who never open the app. Put another way, editors cut video dramas for multiple screens at once.

Stage Five: Choosing Where the Paywall Falls

The final creative decision turns out to be a commercial one as well. In the standard model TheWrap describes, the first eight to ten episodes are free. The free run on ReelShort is usually five to 15 episodes, going by its own blog, and TheWrap counted the first eight in 2024. Episodes after that unlock with coins, with the standard cost of an episode listed as about 60 coins in ReelShort’s blog. Watching ads also earns coins, and according to the same blog one ad unlocks two premium episodes; otherwise, you can buy a weekly VIP pass that costs about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 and renews automatically. The price in your store may differ, since prices vary by country, platform and promotion. Placement is the controversial part, because paywalls landing right on a cliffhanger are among the most common complaints about these apps, along with auto-renewing weekly passes and rising coin costs. Coin generators and modded “unlimited coins” apps promising a way around the wall are unofficial and best avoided.

Stage Six: Animation and AI-Made Series

In the newest production stage, the camera is gone entirely. ReelShort’s live-action library is now accompanied by animated motion comics. The Lost Heir, a 58-episode family saga, tracks Arthur Lancaster, who loses his memory rescuing his brother, grows up on a farm as “Johnny” and eventually exposes the foster sister who kept framing him. Shattered Vows, a 52-episode ReelShort title from 2026, lists no cast: it is an AI-generated animated motion comic about heiress Vanessa Windsor pursuing revenge on the husband and best friend who helped her sister’s killer escape. It should not be confused with a separate 58-episode ShortMax series of the same name. DramaWave has gone furthest, with more than 80 percent of its newly released content AI-generated, according to 36Kr, which also reported that the app’s annualized revenue exceeded $700 million by the second quarter of 2026. AI video dramas have spread beyond the apps too, as Fruit Love Island, an AI-made parody of Love Island featuring fruit contestants, showed on TikTok in March 2026 before critics widely branded it “AI slop”.

Stage Seven: A Hollywood Studio Enters the Line

Traditional studios have taken notice, and the most obvious example is Fox Entertainment. Fox acquired an equity stake in Holywater, the Kyiv-founded company behind the My Drama app, in October 2025. Fox-produced series already available on the app include Billionaire Blackmail, Bound by Obsession and My Heart’s Offside, and Fox has also committed to producing more than 200 vertical titles over two years. Holywater brought in a further $22 million in January 2026 in a round led by Horizon Capital, and My Drama won the 2025 Webby Award for Best Streaming Service. The eight-day shoot, this suggests, has moved from curiosity to line item, now that a network-scale producer is committing to that volume.

The Production Line at a Glance

The logic of the business comes into focus once the stages are set side by side. Much of the rest is arranged around the shoot, the expensive, fixed block. The edit is built around cliffhangers that feed a paywall, casting leans on familiar faces, and scripts usually arrive pre-tested as novels or familiar tropes. Fans who search for a “reel short drama” usually have ReelShort titles in mind, but TheWrap and Wikipedia describe broadly similar methods across the category. Using only publicly reported figures, the table below summarizes typical time and cost at each stage. When no reliable figure has been published, the table says so instead of guessing.
